Job Opportunity: Assistant Director of Visual Communication, Center for Academic and Professional Communication, Rice University

The Center for Academic and Professional Communication (CAPC) at Rice University, a multimodal communication center designed on the model of a traditional university writing center, is looking for an assistant director of visual communication. The CAPC provides resources and support tailored for students, faculty, and staff across the campus. The responsibilities of the assistant director of visual communication in the CAPC include developing visual communication related workshops and other resources for faculty and students, consulting with faculty and students on visual projects, organizing a biennial symposium on visual and multimodal communication, helping the CAPC and the Program in Writing and Communication with in-house visual projects, and helping to assess the CAPC’s visual communication efforts. The assistant director of visual communication also may teach a credit-bearing course on visual and multimodal communication per year.

Education required: Master’s degree

Experience preferred:

Related experience in the following areas:

  • Employment or attendance at a Tier 1 research university
  • Experience developing programs in visual and multimodal communication
  • Experience creating training materials for different academic audiences
  • Experience visualizing research and designing figures
  • Experience with event planning

Skills required:

  • Working knowledge of Windows XP/7/8, OSX, and all MS Office Applications
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite
  • Excellent written and communications skills and the ability to communicate clearly and concisely with diverse audiences
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize work assignments with sustained heavy workload
  • Excellent analytical skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively with program staff, faculty and course teams and external contractors
  • Ability to work on multiple projects
  • Demonstrated project management capabilities using established project planning tools and software
  • Substantial knowledge and skills in current educational technologies, software and learning platforms
  • Proficient in the use of Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop)

Job Opportunity: UNC Chapel Hill, Writing Center

The Writing Center at UNC Chapel Hill invites applications for the full-time, permanent position of English Language Specialist. Duties include organizing and leading graduate-level academic writing groups and intercultural speaking groups, developing and leading instructional modules in academic communication, developing multimedia instructional materials, training writing coaches to work with L2 writers, and contributing to Writing Center initiatives. Minimum qualifications include a Master’s degree in TESOL, Foreign Language Education, or related field (PhD preferred) and 2-5 years of experience teaching English as a Second Language at the college level. Demonstrated skill teaching academic English for graduate students, prior employment in a college-level writing center, and tech or web skills are advantages. Salary commensurate with experience. Writers: Craft & Context is a new open-access interdisciplinary journal that publishes a wide array of material focused on the lived experiences of writers: the work they do, the contexts in which they compose and circulate their work, how they are impacted by policies and pedagogies (broadly conceived) and how they develop across the lifespan.

Job Opportunity: University of Waterloo Writing and Communication Centre

The University of Waterloo Writing and Communication Centre is seeking an experienced writing centre tutor to fill an 18-month contract role to begin immediately.

This is a full-time position (35 hours/week) providing individual and small-group appointments (grad and undergrad), facilitating workshops, collaborating with course instructors, and working with a team of communication specialists to deliver various programs and services on campus. Call for Proposals: 2020 International Writing Across the Curriculum Conference

The Association for Writing Across the Curriculum, the conference directors, and the conference advisory board are pleased to announce the call for proposals for the 2020 International Writing Across the Curriculum Conference. The conference will be held June 3rd through 6th at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado.
