About UBC Vantage College and Position Details

Vantage College at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver) invites applications for a part-time (80%), one-year, non-tenure-track Lecturer position in the field of Arts Studies in Research and Writing (ASRW) to start August 1, 2019. This position offers opportunities to engage in innovative curriculum design and pedagogy in collaborative teaching and learning communities. As a term appointment without review, this one-year position can be renewed upon demonstration of excellence in teaching as defined in Article 4.02 in Part 4 (Conditions of Appointment for Faculty) of the UBC Collective Agreement 2016-2019.

The successful candidate will be expected to dedicate their teaching and service workload to ASRW courses in the Vantage One Arts program. ASRW courses introduce students to the discursive practices of social science and humanities disciplines. UBC Vantage College offers first-year curriculum in a cohort program to academically strong international students whose English language proficiency does not yet meet the English language requirements for direct admission into UBC degrees. Students take courses in one of Vantage College’s three programs (Arts, Science, or Engineering) before transferring into second year in their degree program. The primary goals of the Vantage College curriculum are: (1) to encourage students’ cultural, linguistic, and academic engagement in disciplinary communities and (2) to maximize students’ successful transition to year two in the Faculties of Arts, Science, or Applied Science.

The successful candidate will work closely with Vantage College colleagues in Arts to develop, implement, and share innovative teaching practices and curricula. The successful candidate can expect to teach the following courses, taught by ASRW faculty in Vantage College:

• ASTU 204A (Topics in Interdisciplinary Arts Studies: Inquiry and Evidence in the Humanities and Social Sciences), 3 sections;
• WRDS 150 (Research and Writing in the Humanities and Social Sciences), 3 sections.

This part-time (80%) Lecturer position involves a teaching load of 18 credits (i.e., six 3-credit courses), plus 1 credit of teaching-related activities such as curriculum development (May-June 2020), plus service.

Qualifications and Expected Applicant Profile

Applicants will have a doctorate in a relevant field, including writing and discourse studies, composition, rhetoric, applied linguistics, language and literacy studies, or equivalent experience teaching academic writing in university environments in a way that is informed by current theories in writing pedagogy. Evidence of teaching excellence is required. Evidence of successful team building, collaboration, and curriculum development is an asset, as is a keen interest in the scholarship of teaching and learning.

The CASDW Annual Award for the Best Article or Chapter in Writing and Discourse Studies recognizes the best journal article or book chapter published during the 2018 calendar year by a CASDW member. Co-authored articles or chapters will be eligible as long as one of the authors is a CASDW member.

The deadline for nominations is April 1, 2019. The winner of the award will be announced at the CASDW Annual Conference.  Authors are invited to nominate their own publications as well as those of other CASDW members. In order to be eligible, nominees must have been CASDW members in both 2018 and 2019.

The assessment criteria for the award are as follows: (1) the overall quality of the writing and thinking; (2) the significance of the question(s) addressed in the research; (3) the importance of the new knowledge presented in the article; and (3) and methodological rigour and/or innovation.

The award includes a prize of $100 and a one-year CASDW membership for the following year.

The Joan Pavelich CASDW Annual Award for the Best Dissertation in Writing and Discourse Studies recognizes an outstanding PhD dissertation in Writing Studies, Discourse Studies, Rhetoric, or a cognate field for 2018. The award will be given to a student in a Canadian university or to a Canadian student studying outside Canada. To be eligible, dissertations must have been defended between January 1, 2018 and December 31, 2018. An announcement of the winning dissertation will be made at the CASDW Annual Conference. Nominees do not need to be CASDW members, and self-nominations are accepted.

The award includes a prize of $100 and a one-year free CASDW membership for the following year.

The deadline for nominations is April 1, 2019. The assessment criteria for the award are as follows: (1) the overall quality of the writing and thinking; (2) the significance of the question(s) addressed in the research; (3) the importance of the new knowledge presented in the thesis; and (3) and methodological rigour and/or innovation.

The Dean’s Office in the Faculty of Arts & Science at the University of Toronto invites
applications for a two-year contractually-limited term appointment in the area of writing
instruction. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream and will commence on July 1, 2019, ending June 30, 2021. The successful candidate will participate in the administration and assist in the expansion of an innovative and well-established faculty-wide writing-in-the-disciplines initiative, Writing-Integrated Teaching (WIT). WIT works collaboratively with faculty and teaching assistants (TAs) from units across Arts & Science to integrate writing instruction into disciplinary courses through effective assignment design and writing-to-learn activities. The successful candidate will report to the Vice-Dean, Undergraduate & International in the Faculty of Arts & Science.

The successful candidate will:

• Work with the WIT Director on undergraduate writing and related teaching initiatives
• Collaborate with a growing team of writing specialists to support reading, writing, and language instruction across the Faculty of Arts & Science
• Engage in faculty and TA development related to writing and language instruction
• Work with the WIT Director to collect and analyze data about undergraduate writing and related teaching initiatives
• Develop and disseminate curricular and pedagogical resources for faculty, TAs, and
  students.
• Be expected to teach undergraduate courses (including in the First-Year Foundations Program)

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in an Arts & Science-related discipline with experience teaching writing by the time of appointment. Candidates must also possess:

• Experience and demonstrated excellence designing and teaching writing or writing-intensive courses as an instructor at the post-secondary level
• Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively in a collaborative setting with faculty, TAs, and students from different disciplines with tact, flexibility, and efficiency
• Excellent pedagogical practices and a demonstrated interest in teaching-related
  scholarly activity
• A publication record in writing studies/composition and/or the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning
• Experience teaching diverse and multilingual students
• Experience and/or familiarity with different institutional models for teaching writing
• Knowledge of current scholarship including research methods in writing
  studies/composition and an understanding of the principles of writing in the
  disciplines/writing across the curriculum
• The ability to design, adapt, organize, archive, and disseminate instructional and
  curricular materials for a range of teaching contexts, including online delivery
• Familiarity with the roles and functions of teaching assistants in large classes
• Excellent oral and written communication skills and demonstrated ability to facilitate interactive workshops

Evidence of experience and excellence in teaching academic writing in a university or postsecondary setting, as well as pedagogical development, is essential and can be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments (e.g., awards, recognition, curriculum development, pedagogical presentations and publications), strong letters of reference, and the teaching dossier (which should include a teaching statement, sample syllabi and course materials, and teaching evaluations), submitted as part of the application.
