Reporting to the Manager of Writing Services, the Writing Specialist provides individual consultations, in-class instruction, and targeted programming to support undergraduate, graduate, and faculty writers in discovering, developing, and communicating academic ideas. With a deep knowledge of writing in a variety of disciplines, genres, and forms, the Writing Specialist guides writers in thinking and writing critically and in employing effective rhetorical strategies in specific contexts. The Writing Specialist advises individual faculty and curriculum committees on best practices for incorporating writing into courses and curricula. The Writing Specialist also trains and supervises a team of student writing consultants and supports classroom instructors in developing writing instruction approaches for a variety of disciplines, courses, and assignments.
Writing Services is a key resource on writing and related issues for the university community. The Writing Specialist is responsible for acquiring and maintaining, through research and study of the literature, current knowledge of a range of issues and best practices related to university-level writing, the integration of writing skills into course curricula, multilingual writers, effective and engaging pedagogical practices, assessment of writing, and a range of other relevant writing issues. The Writing Specialist also contributes to the unit’s expertise on student writing by participating in the unit’s program of research, assessment and evaluation, and dissemination of results.
Requirements of the position include:
- Minimum of a Master’s degree and two years’ related practical experience teaching writing and assessing written work at the university level, preferably in a writing centre environment or the equivalent combination of education and experience
- Experience delivering effective and engaging presentations and workshops
- Expertise in individual writing consultation strategies and knowledge of a variety of disciplines and genres, particularly writing in the sciences
- Experience supporting writers with theses and dissertations
- Experience assisting writers for whom English is an additional language
- Knowledge of best practices in teaching writing and incorporating writing into curricula
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Ability to work collaboratively and supportively within a team
- Strong organizational skills and ability to take a self-directed approach to responsibilities
